One example of something that makes a disconcerting feeling of not-rightness well up in me is seeing grown-ups in grocery stores pushing shopping carts stacked with cases of soda. In the normal course of things, I don’t care if people consume soda through IVs and enemas, but I can’t help being stunned by the beastly unconsciousness of it. What grown-up drinks soda? It seems unthinkable but it’s insanely normal.
