What is needed, rather than running away or controlling
or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding
fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly
into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to
escape from it.Jiddu Krishnamurti
In theory, it doesn’t seem possible that one who has experienced the initial nondual insight could then unexperience it; that after fully grokking the untruth of duality, one could somehow un-grok it, or allow the noxious weed of duality to become re-established in one’s mental-emotional garden. As unlikely as it may seem in theory, however, in practice this bell can be unrung. We are not inflexible bio-computers guided by infallible logic circuits and high-precision datasets, we are easily programmable, de-programmable and re-programmable blobs of malware-infected wetware. Just because we’ve experienced the initial nondual insight doesn’t mean our mini-awakening can’t be reversed. We can close our eyes again and slip back beneath the waves just as easily as we can press the snooze button on the alarm clock. On the one hand, it doesn’t seem possible, on the other, it seems as common as crabgrass. (That’s an old saying I just made up. Help me get it out there.)
