The term uncanny valley refers to the downward plunge on a graph where our comfort with artificial humans turns to revulsion. As they get more and more real we like them more and more and the line on the chart goes up and up, but then they become a little too real and the line suddenly plummets – the uncanny valley – as we become not just less amused but totally skeezed out. The spiritual dyspepsia we feel when we detect an imposter such as an android or a mask-wearer or any counterfeit person is visceral. In the TV show Westworld, the robots, hosts, are indistinguishable from humans. They are beyond the uncanny valley, where the line goes back up, not because they’re more acceptable but because they’re undetectable.
Okay, hold that thought, we’ll come back to it. Let’s talk about me.
