Speaking of Karma

(audio available for paid subscribers)

If you're really a mean person you're
going to come back as a fly and eat poop.

Like all good bullshit, karma is not without some basis, loosely speaking, in truth. The so-called law of karma is purely a dreamstate phenomenon, meaning it has no nondual component or counterpart, meaning it does not, in truth, exist, but there’s still the question of whether it’s an operating principle in our reality or just baseless superstition. As you sow, so they say, so shall you reap, but shall you? Universal justice is a pretty thought, but is it anything more than that? Does what goes around really come around? Do chickens come home to roost? Does a day of reckoning approach? Is the love you take equal to the love you make, or is that just another silly love song?

Is karma a spiritual accounting system? Is there a book in which our deeds are recorded and weighed? A ledger that must be balanced? In what light? Harm intended? Damage done? Straight up good and evil? When did we determine that those exist, since they knowably don’t? Are kids in burn wards burning past-life karma? Who’s in charge of judging us and how do we kill them? If I do good toward you to benefit myself, am I selfless or selfish? Is karma a law, or just a bitch?
