and one evil, ignorance.
Setting: A shaded courtyard at the Academy. Socrates sits on a marble bench, while his young student, Theaetetus, sits opposite him.
Socrates: Tell me, Theaetetus, as you look out at these marble columns, the olive trees, and the blue Aegean, what gives you confidence that any of it exists as it appears to you?
Theaetetus: Why, Socrates, my own eyes and hands. I see the stone, I feel its roughness, I hear your voice.
Socrates: A compelling answer! Yet, when you dream, do you not also see stones, feel warmth, and hear voices, believing all the while that they are real?
