From Herdmistress Maya’s perspective, it doesn’t matter where in the herd you are, only that you’re in the herd. You can be the most devout religious adherent or straightlaced conformist or goody two-shoes dwelling at herd-center, or you can drift to the outermost spiral arms of the herd with the radical outliers and fringe lunatics; it makes no difference to Maya. The herd moves as a single unit — where we go all, we go one — so the outer herd is moving in the same slow circuit as the inner herd. For some, it’s just a more comfortable place to run out the clock.
