If you want to know what a finished puzzle will look like, does it make more sense to look at the picture on the box first, or just start smashing pieces together according to an ever-changing image in your head? When we try to solve the dreamstate puzzle – or any sub-section thereof – without looking at the box, it can never be more than a jumbled mess, but when we look at the box first, the pieces will fall into place the only way they can. That’s the difference between bottom-up and top-down thinking. Work downward from clarity and reason and a complete picture emerges. Work upward from emotion, belief and biographical baggage, and you’ll never know what the hell you’re working toward, or why.
