The plain fact is that education is itself a form of propaganda – a deliberate scheme to outfit the pupil, not with the capacity to weigh ideas, but with a simple appetite for gulping ideas ready-made. The aim is to make ‘good’ citizens, which is to say, docile and uninquisitive citizens.
H.L. Mencken
School is where wonder, curiosity and joie de vivre go to die. It’s where youth grows old, where a supple and dynamic spirit gets calcified, where childhood in the positive aspect becomes adulthood in the negative aspect. Reading, writing and reckoning form the basis of a real education, the rest is mostly thought-retardant; mental asbestos. You don’t have to go to school to learn groupthink and mindless conformity – the herd will teach you soon enough – but it pays to know what the ministries are really up to.
